The next Friends of Rawcliffe Meadows Work Party is on Sunday 25th January 2015 from 10:30 until 13:00 in the Reservoir Basin (northern end of site, below the allotments – any queries of how to get there, let us know).
Weather (and water levels) permitting, the intention is to cut back 50% of the Common Reed (Phragmites) from the fenced-off large scrape in the Reservoir Basin (behind the new unfenced one in the photo below) – I’ll try and do as much as possible with hedge-trimmers but we need to tie up the arisings in bundles and stack away from flood level within the hedging to provide invertebrate habitat. It’s pretty boggy now so wellies and old clothes ideal. I’m not saying it’ll be as bad as when Helen and Mike got a bit carried away in 2011, but it could be soggy…
Volunteers welcome for all or part of that period. Please look for the A board and listen for the squelching…
