Moth Trapping at Rawcliffe Meadows 27th June 2016

Coleophora deauratella

Coleophora deauratella (c) Charles Fletcher

Previous visitors Charlie Fletcher, Warwick Benson and Jill Warwick arranged to set some moth traps overnight on 27th June 2016 in the hope of possibly trapping the rare Dentated Pug (foodstuff yellow loosestrife, Lysimachia vulgaris) or Marsh Carpet moth (common meadow-rue, Thalictrium flavum) when visiting the plants which are common on the site. They didn’t but still had a good haul of over 100 species with several Coleophora sp. to dissect at a later date.  Charlie reports that it may be worth trapping again for Dentated Pug a week or two later.   Most of their records are in early July.

The best moth was Coleophora deauratella.  There are five previous Yorkshire records, all in VC63, so this is the first for VC62.  It was first found in the county in 2013.  The larvae feed on red clover.  15 species were new for the 10K square, 12 micros and 3 macros (Broad-barred White, Beautiful Hook-tip and Dark Spectacle).

Our grateful thanks to Charlie, Jill, Alan and Warwick for all the hard work in doing this.
